After reading on the dangerous effects of name brand chap stick, I decided it was time to ditch the habit, and I made some of my own. I lacked fancy ingredients like beeswax and shea butter, so I made a very simple one out of coconut oil, honey and olive oil, with lemon flavor added for good measure. I pressed it into an old Carmex container and put it in the fridge.
Pros: tastes great, keeps my lips hydrated, is a cool thing to mention (haha)
Cons: due to the melty nature of coconut oil, it must stay in the fridge, because of that I only use it twice daily, at breakfast and dinner
I had an unfortunate encounter with some grease earlier this week (on my face). It was pretty obnoxious and painful and I couldn't find ointment, so I broke out the -you guessed it- coconut oil. I rub 1/4 of a tablespoon or so onto the scabs about three times a day.
Pros: They are healing well, one of the burns has already closed. Also, it doesn't have to stay in the fridge because it doesn't have the liquid olive oil. Has none of the chemicals of ointment.
Cons: None, really.
I read that the fatty acids in this oil can be very beneficial to our skin. So, I have rubbed about a teaspoon onto my face a few times. Note that I have pretty average skin, not greasy or dry.
Pros: Smells nice. No chemicals. Easy to use.
Cons: Takes about five minutes to sink in, makes your hands greasy.
I am loving coconut oil right now, both inside and out. I intend to try more and more things with this interesting ingredient!
